APGJSA Gold Rate Announcement – How It Affects Daily Prices in Pakistan

What is APGJSA?

The All Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association (APGJSA) is the apex body representing the gold, silver, and gems trading community in Pakistan. Its most important daily function is announcing the official gold rate — the price benchmark that all Pakistani jewellers, sarafa shops, and gold traders follow.

When you see "today's gold rate" on any reliable Pakistani website, that rate originates from APGJSA.

How APGJSA Sets the Daily Gold Rate

APGJSA follows a systematic process every working day:

Step 1: Monitor International Gold Price

APGJSA tracks the international gold spot price on the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA). The London PM Gold Fix — announced around 3:00 PM London time (7:00–8:00 PM Pakistan time) — serves as the primary reference for the next day's Pakistan rate.

Step 2: Apply USD/PKR Exchange Rate

The international gold price (USD per troy ounce) is converted to PKR per tola:

  • USD price ÷ 2.6667 = USD per tola (since 1 troy ounce = 2.6667 tolas)
  • USD per tola × USD/PKR morning rate = PKR per tola

Step 3: City Consultation

Representatives from major city sarafa associations (Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar) may consult and agree on the day's rate, especially when market conditions warrant discussion.

Step 4: Official Announcement

The final rate is officially announced, typically between 10 AM and 1 PM on working days. This rate is immediately communicated to:

  • All member sarafa associations across Pakistan
  • Gold rate tracking websites and newspapers
  • Financial media outlets

How APGJSA Rate Flows to Your Local Jeweller

  1. APGJSA announces rate from Karachi/Lahore
  2. City-level associations receive and broadcast to members
  3. Individual sarafa shops display the rate at their counters
  4. Customers see and negotiate based on this rate

APGJSA Holidays and Non-Working Days

APGJSA does not announce rates on:

  • Sundays
  • Public holidays (Eid ul Fitr, Eid ul Adha, Pakistan Independence Day, etc.)
  • Emergency closures

On non-announcement days, the last announced rate remains the official market rate.

Where is APGJSA headquartered?

APGJSA's central operations are based in Karachi, with representation from all major Pakistani cities including Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, and Quetta.

Does APGJSA control gold quality in Pakistan?

APGJSA focuses primarily on gold pricing and trade representation. Gold quality and hallmarking standards are regulated by PSQCA (Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority). APGJSA advocates for industry standards but quality enforcement is a government function.
